Google restricts Keyword Planner data

In August 2016 marketers noticed Google Keyword Planner showing broad search-volume ranges instead of precise figures for some accounts.

Ranges such as “100K–1M” replaced the more specific data users had been accustomed to. What first appeared to be a technical issue was subsequently confirmed as a product change affecting accounts with lower advertising spend.

The shift was a useful reminder not to treat a single platform’s estimate as the whole picture. Search planning benefits from combining tool data with observed customer language, site performance and genuine audience questions.
